Series 05 · Your level

Your padel level, honestlyAsk a club social what level they are. You'll hear one word forty times.

“Intermediate.” The word is doing no work. Here's the honest tour of every way padel measures you — what each rating actually knows, where each one lies, and how to place yourself truthfully.

The ratings you already have

Results-based levels know if you won. Never why.

Playtomic's 0–7 and the new cross-club standards are genuinely good at their job — matchmaking. They share a design limit: the scoreboard is their only witness, and in doubles half of every scoreboard belongs to your partner.

The over-rating problem, measured
App levelCoach verdict≈ 1 level lower
In a 2026 peer-reviewed study of 180 club players, the results-based app level over-rated players by nearly a full level against expert coaches. How the Playtomic level works → · the study →

Ask two qualified coaches to rate the same player and their agreement is moderate at best — level is genuinely hard, which is why any honest rating carries error bars. Even coaches disagree → · UK levels compared →

Test yourself, honestly

Behaviours don't flatter.

Ten observable questions — what you actually do under a deep lob, behind your serve, on your return — place you more truthfully than any self-assessment. No opinion required: you either take the net behind your serve or you don't. What padel level am I? →

Take the honest self-test →

Sample: three of the ten questions
Q1A deep lob goes over your head at the net. What actually happens next?
Q2You've hit your serve. Where are you standing two shots later?
Q3Your return of serve: how many died in the net last match?
Each answer maps to an observable level band — what you do, not what you think you are.

The PADEXA Index: scoring how you play

How you play. Not just whether you won.

A 0–100 score built from five evidence-weighted pillars — net control, error economy, transitions, finishing, serve & return — blended with results and confidence-rated. It moves when your behaviour moves, not a season later. The full methodology, with citations →
